'Should I see my linux box in Windows Neighborhood?

I've got telnet, ftp and samba working now. But still see some odd stuff and not sure it reflects an incorrect setup.

1) Win2K can't see the linux box (part of same domain and subnet) in the 'Computers Near Me'. Is this normal/correct?

2) I had to specify the IP to set up the shared folder on linux - the name wasn't found (but it's in the host and lmhosts files)

3) I can't ping the Windows machine from the linux machine.

4) Related - I use only a dial-up from my Win2K machine, behind Norton Firewall and (usually) Proxomitron... is there a security risk using telnet and ftp between my Win2K and Linux boxes over my ethernet lan? The lan is a small home lan and I'm the only one using it.

Do you have DNS running in your subnet?

I tried specifying the Win2K machine as a DNS server (it has the full hosts and lmhosts files). Didn't make any difference.

Regarding the ping-ing, do you use netbios names or IP addresses?
Make sure your firewall isn't blocking stuff

I have samba running here and I can see the machine (and it's shares etc) on my XP machine in the network neighbourhood etc.

I've tried to ping using the IP addresses, as in "192.168.236.10" and the names appearing in the hosts file, as in "arrow.archer", (the name of the Win2K box). Not sure what you mean by netbios name. The host name?

Either way, thanks for the discussion.

1.1 IP address?
1.2 Netbos name?

I can ping from Win2K to Linux by either name or IP.

When I try to ping from Linux to Win2K I can see that the correct IP is being used, but it appears to hang - I have to Ctrl-C out. It reports the number of pings and 100% loss.

Note: I looked at the network status on the Win2K machine and it registers single byte receives each second.

Could this mean that I need to turn off some sort of security setting? I've looked around Win2K but haven't found any yet.

Are you running win2k server?

If so, there is a setting that can disable ping's to protect your server from attacks like "ping of death".

check under "IP security Policy" in mmc (start run 'mmc/s')

hope this helps

As far as I can tell, there are no firewall rules active.

When I tried to telnet from Linux to Win2K I got the following message:

Server allows NTLM authentication only. Server has closed connection. Connection closed by foreign host.

running ipchains -L it looks like all references are wide open.

also check your wins server setup. it's easiest to let the windows box be the wins server and point to it in the samba conf file.
