Thumbs up Ubuntu side-bar... Is that something I can add to Mint 17 Cinnamon x64?

Saw it, looks neat. Doesn't appear as though I can change the taskbar from other than top or bottom, and I'm assuming that's what the Ubuntu side-bar is. Does anyone have any insight? Thanks.

I really don't know. I thought it was an add-in possibly. Not well-versed with Linux, obviously.

Hi,

well, without further qualification,"side-bar", could mean any number of things. Perhaps this
http://gamblisfx.com/how-to-install-...linux-mint-17/ is what you are referring to?

Hmm... Kind of. I have seen Ubuntu 14, and I have seen a few vids from Jupiter Broadcasting - apparently they're using Ubuntu(?) and I see a bit of a dock on the left side, with apparently frequently used or pasted shortcuts there. If that's what you're meaning, I'll take a shot at the post you just put up.

I'm not meaning anything. I'm trying to help you clarify your question. Please do not take my posting of that link as advice to follow what is described there.

I am not an Ubuntu or Mint user so consider me mostly clueless - but you said that you had "seen it", presumably on a website or computer...?

If you could post a screenshot or link to an image I bet someone here would recognize it.

It sounds like the OP is referring to the Unity quick launch bar on the left side of Unity.

If this is the case then it is possibly possible but Linux Mint does not support it, meaning Unity, so I think it will be difficult to achieve without the help of someone who has actually done it.

I think you're on target. I'm assuming it was just built-into Ubuntu 14 (12? 13?) for I remember it being available to move to the left-hand side when I used it. This time, instead of installing *nix on a VM, when my hd @ home died, I decided to gamble and try a full native install of Linux, this case, Mint 17 Cinnamon. But I blather on...

Ubuntu had the side-bar (don't know what else to call it) sort of like a launcher or the like. But - and I'm not sure how to phrase it - Unity is a Desktop Environment (like KDE or Mate, Cinnamon?)? I don't think I want to deal with much pain, but if there were any programs like the side-bar/launcher in Unity that I could have on the left-hand side of the screen that would be great.

I won't take it as a green light to screw things up. I appreciate your reply.

unity is basically a "shell" that sits on top of Gnome 3 the exact same way Gnome Shell sits on top of Gnome 3. Cinnamon is a highly modified fork of Gnome 3 made to look like gnome 2.x They, like KDE, MATE, LXDE, and XFCE, are all Desktop Environments. You can also use Window Managers but that's another topic.

If you want something like the "quick launcher" like Unity and Gnome Shell have you could try Docky.

I think, but I'm not sure, you can put that in various places on the screen, most have it at the bottom though.

Yes, I have Docky installed. Can't seem to get it to move tho. I'll get used to it. I don't want to go around messing too much with a good desktop, as Mint/Cinnamon seem to be. I remember watching a LAS show where they were talking about Mint and Cinnamon being a fork of Gnome 2. I don't understand the reasons and maybe I don't want to know why Thanks for the input!
