I recently built a new machine & installed Linux Mint 17.3 on a SSD.
I have a 1TB HDD installed that I want to use for my storage.
I fiddled about with it awhile back & I can see it in my Computer folder from the desktop. I have to "Open as Root" to be able to create folders or do anything. Is this normal?
I am looking to rip all my music CDs & put them on this drive. I just want to use the drive for music, videos & whatever. Do I need the Home folder on this drive?
I found I could rip a CD to the MUSIC folder on the SSD & then copy it to the HDD by using the "Open as Root" option in properties. There's got to be an easier way. I must not have something set up right. I am new to Linux so go easy on me.

Since you obviously have the drive formatted and working in Mint, you're most of the way there. The reason you have to "Open as root", is that the drive isn't automatically mounted when your system boots. And root is the only user that (right now, on your system), has permission to mount a drive.
...is the better way (in my opinion), since you'll get to understand what's going on. If you've already got your /home mounted on your SSD, I'd just create another directory (such as /external or whatever you want to name it), and mount the external drive to that mount-point.
I think it may be working now. I am able to drag & drop pictures onto the secondary drive that I labeled HDD since my OS drive is SSD.
Thanks to both of you guys for the help & the links that I didn't understand
I ended up using your link as my basis beachboy2. It helped me get the correct format down & enable user permission.
Not that TB0ne's link was bad. I just found myself scratching my head for awhile & giving up.
I am now able to rip music to the drive & use it the way I wanted so thanks again for helping me.
