Well...this an old AMD64 machine I built 10-15 years ago and just tinker with it now. Been running MX for about a year on it which runs fine but decided to go back to Mint as it seems more robust. Im ok with editing the boot each time as it seems to run fine. "Did you use grub-customizer?" - In MX there is some sort of customizer that let me change the appearance as it boots into MX but I did that way before I did the Mint update. mint@mint-System-Product-Name:~$ ls -R /etc/grub.d

Those aren't the standard files in /etc/grub.d and I believe is the cause of the problem. Maybe following these instructions will help.
Well...You are officially over my head! Not sure how to go about this one.
Just to let you know I also posted on the Linux Mint Forum to see if anyone over there might have some ideas.
