From the look of the URL and from searching the site for 17.3, I reckon they just update the page for the latest version of Mint, thus erasing all the older information.

Archive.org's Wayback Machine (https://web.archive.org/) to the rescue. Entering your URL there gives some snapshots from 2014 onwards, including some 17 series ones (the latest I can find is 17.3 on 23 Apr 2016).

If you find any difficulty navigating the Wayback Machine let me know, but it is fairly easy to do and it is worth you getting the experience of using it for cases such as this.

Out of interest, is there any particular reason you have put off upgrading to Mint 18.1?

I think you're right, hydrurga; I think that once a newer version becomes available, those who choose not to upgrade are left to fend for ourselves.

Finally, yes, there IS a reason why I didn't upgrade to Mint 18.1. I was a career MS DOS/Windows guy, ever since the early MS DOS days in the late 70's. Around 2013-14, I got fed up with MS's "planned obsolescence", get rich quick scheme. I searched around the web and stumbled upon a Linux OS with the "look and feel" of MS Windows, but bullet-proof, highly secure, highly customizable and user driven. I repartitioned and formatted my hard drive into EXT format, installed Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon - and never looked back!

I love Linux Mint 17.3. I DID contemplate moving to Linux Mint 18, but 17.3 does everything that I need, and considering that the newer Ubuntu software is not for the faint of heart, I thought it better to stay where I am. I have a basic understanding of the Mint Cinnamon interface, but I am, by no means, a Linux geek (and I mean that most respectfully).

17.3 is supported until April 2019 so that's good.

However, after that, in order to remain secure, at some point you're going to have to take the plunge and upgrade to a newer version of Mint. As long as you have backed up all your data (and, for good measure, made images of your Mint partitions), you should be ok.

I know it doesn't look like it, particularly with my post count, but apart from a couple of early skirmishes with Linux (when I originally joined LQ) I'm not really a Linux geek either - I was a solid Windows guy until about a year and a half ago. I then ran Mint 17.3 KDE for several months until Mint 18 came out, and switched over to Mint 18 MATE as I didn't like the look of the new KDE Plasma desktop. I did a reinstall of Mint 18 which was easy for me to do as I keep install and configuration notes for all my programs, a hangover from the days of supporting many Windows users and not having the best of memories.

Anyway, don't leave it to upgrade until you're absolutely forced to...

P.S. What do you mean by "the newer Ubuntu software is not for the faint of heart"? I haven't noticed any real differences between Mint 17.3 and 18.1, not that affect me as a simple end-user anyway.

So, it seems we have similar backgrounds, based upon our before and after experiences. Yeah, I'm content with Mint 17.3 Cinnamon, so I'll likely stay put until I'm forced to migrate.
