Can't seem to boot from USB

Hello everyone! In the past couple of days I have decided to start using Linux. Don't ask me why, I've just had the urge!

I get it all installed correctly etc, restart, boot from USB (usb actually shows as another harddrive when linux is installed on it) and choose 'Start Linux Mint'. This is where the problems start...

First time I did this I got the 'out of range' error from my monitor. I have a 19" widescreen so I highly doubt it is the resolution, but more likely to be the refresh rate. So my first questions would be, does anyone know how to fix this problem?
If I plug in another monitor, let it get onto the next window and then plug my monitor back in it all works fine.

After working around the above problem by using a different monitor, I end up having a different problem.
I have got this using both Linux Mint and Ubuntu. Basically, after you start linux off of the USB you get a kind of splash screen/loading screen. (link to screenshot: http://www.linuxmint.com/tmp/clem/co...als/37/bad.png)
My computer simply doesn't move on from this stage. I have left it for well over an hour trying it with both Linux Mint and Ubuntu but I have had no success.

This is the bit that confuses me though... Using the same usb and the same files, I can run them off of another small laptop, and all computers at school that allow me to boot from a usb.

Has anyone got any ideas at all what could be causing these problems? I have tried google, I have been for hours, but I can't seem to find anything that I either know how to use, or that has helped.

Please go into necessary detail as I am very new to Linux!

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi and welcome,

How did you create the usb images? I mean using which tool?

I used Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.7 which I got from this link: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/univers...easy-as-1-2-3/

I also checked the hash of the iso to make sure it hadn't been corrupt during download

And therein lies your problem. Try using this one instead. I've had nothing but crash-during-boot from the one you used.
http://www.linuxliveusb.com/

It seems to work well even with distros that it doesn't have listed in its database.

I have tried it, but haven't had any success.

It just stays with this on the screen......

Edit: seem to have got past that stage now! Downloaded a new iso

Edit#2: Now it stops responding on the boot

I don't seem to find the exact problem by looking at that screen, still just to let you know, I use unetbootin to create live usbs and that hardly ditched me .

I don't know what the problem is either, it just freezes there and doesn't load, or does load and stops responding =/
