Have you looked at the logs? I would start with /var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Look for messages time-stamped around the time to enter suspend and any subsequent ones.

I was hoping his could be fixed by updating the kernel so I installed an updated kernel
on boot up I found this a the end of the boot up messages
Code:

Loading ALSA mixer settings: /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
No state is present for card MID
Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "IDT 92HD75B3X5" "HDA:111d7603,103c172b,00100202 HDA:11c11040,103c3066,00100200" "0
x103c" "0x172b"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method
No state is present for card MID
No state is present for card NVidia
Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Nvidia GPU 0b HDMI/DP" "HDA:10de000b,10de0101,00100200" "0x103c" "0x172b"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method
No state is present for card NVidia
Starting gpm: /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/mouse -t ps2
this message only shows up in the boot screen it.s not in any of the logs or in the dmesg output
now it looks like I need to install the nvidia driver
I was at the nvidia web site BUT they want an aftermarket product name for this GPU I don't have one as this is a built in GPU

in the boot screen this is preceded by a line about NVidia BUT the Nvidia line is missing from the logs and dmesg
Code:
