What distribution should I choose?

I'm looking into switching to Linux from MSWin. but I'm a little confused as to what distribution I should go for. I've dl Mandrake 9.2 since it seemed quite graphical, but I've run into some problems regarding hardware detection. My system is a laptop Dell Inspiron 7000, PII 333 MHz, 256 MB RAM. I guess what I'm looking for is a distribution that just works without to much manual setting up (if that i possible with any OS). Thanks...

Try Knoppix or Mepis.

If they detect your hardware properly, then you can run "apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade" - easiest possible way to install Debian, for many people.

I think Fedora Core 1 or SuSE is very suitable for you. both of them are very fast and easy to use.
but your speed of cpu seems to be too slow, i don't think you are really satisfied with your laptop.

There can be some compatability issues with laptops that are somewhat different for desktops so be sure and read over what you can in this area. There are usually configurations that will resolve these issues but they can be a bit tricky while you're dealing with them. In addition to this website take a look at the following sites: http://www.google.com/linux and http://www.linux-laptop.net/

Very best,
Nick
