What desktop environment do you use on your laptop, and why?
I was feeling a little curious if people choose to use different DEs for their laptop than say, their desktop system. On my desktop right now I'm using Debian/Fluxbox, and on my new laptop right now I have installed SuSE/KDE (but may change depending on what's said in this thread). I'm using KDE because 1) It's what SuSE installed for me and I have had little time to play with my new machine, 2) It seems like it would be easier to have an integrated environment where I could easily check my battery, wireless connections, etc. But I'm wondering if I should switch to a DE that is lighter and faster like Fluxbox, because after all KDE eats up more CPU. And one of the main reasons I have this laptop in the first place is so I can show off how cool Linux is to the unenlightened, and KDE doesn't look very cool IMO because it's too "Windows-like".
On my laptop(1.8GHZ, 256MB RAM) which runs Debian, i use XFCE because of ram usage. If it wasn't that i would run GNOME on it. I try to avoid any K* software, i keep it GTK with the less dependencies if possible(no libgnomeui*, etc.). I was thinking about using idesk(http://idesk.sourceforge.net/) for desktop icons, i might do it in few days. I installed xfld-desktop from http://xfld.org.
On the PC, which has less resources, i use FVWM2 because it is highly configurable, fast and it can emulate other environments(blacbox, cde, osx, afterstep, windows xp, etc.). It has lots of modules(taskbar, pager, buttons which can act like desktop icons, application can be swallowed like dock-apps, etc..)
I run KDE on my friend's laptop (Celeron 650MHz, 64MB RAM) beause I use KDE on my Linux server. I use it on my server because all of the Slackware packages run decently on it, and KDE was the first choice in the default X client selection.
XFCE is second choice if for some reason I want to not use KDE (time constraint, etc).
The laptop (Gentoo) because KDE was being stupid and wouldn't let me configure anything as a user...the modules couldn't be found. After much googling and fiddling with it, I gave up, unmerged it and installed gnome.
