volume buttons question

Hi there, I've tried searching through this forum and the hardware forum to no avail (though I assume the answer is probably already out there somewhere) but how do I get the volume buttons on my laptop working? (mute would be nice to have also).

specs:
openSUSE 11.0/KDE4
Hp/Compaq nx6125 (Turion64)

Are there settings in KDE itself? I've tried going into Kmix but the shortcuts menu does not seem to have an option for volume up/down. Is there some kind of driver I need to make suse recognize the buttons? I just started using linux so any help is much appreciated.

The special buttons for things like volume control and mute are not part of a standard keyboard layout, so there will have to be some way of telling the operating system what to do when they're pressed. This means drivers will be required.

A quick check on the HP site shows that they don't officially support Linux for this model;

So, unless anyone knows of an opensource equivalent then you may be stuck with Kmix as your only control method.

I don't really know enough about the special keys to know whether it's a motherboard driver or a keyboard driver that you need. But you can bet it's not a universal one. That would be too easy :-)

Regards,

Richard.
