Unable to reboot

I am not sure what happened that lead to this but I cannot reboot from a console or from the log out menu.

It starts to reboot, then hangs after the screen goes black.

I duel boot linux, one platform, Fubuntu, works fine.
The other, Mint xfce, has the problem.

I have a Samsung nc10 netbook, 2 gigs memory 140 gig HD

any help would be appreciated.
