Try running knoppix on it first. I didn't find your model at http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html
and the closest one,
Toshiba Satellite 5205-S703
is a dead link. You can see there, in general, how easy/hard it is to get Linux on Toshiba.
i did. results are that USB mouse works, the screen resolution doesnt fill up the whole monitor, sound device isnt detected, and the finger pad thing doesnt work.
I have the 5105-S701 and I installed RH 9 with little difficulty.
Few issues off the top of my head that I ran into.
- NVIDIA Drivers (from Nvidia site)
- XF86Config (I can post my file if you want to see it)
- The CPAD has drivers and there is a website for it, but I have not been able to get it working on my machine yet. But then, I haven't tried very hard either.
- SD Card, rumor has it that there is a way to get it working but I haven't done that either.
Somethings I have not messed with yet...
Firewire, Smartcard, front panel LCD and push buttons.
Hey could you give me any indication of what pitfalls, if any, you ran into installing your version of Suse? I have the same computer. I have been doing some research in google but your link to this thread is the only thing I could come across to match. You can email me at budweisersucks@hotmail.com so we can chat about the Suse Installation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony

I am running SuSe 9.3 now. The only problems I have has was that my firewire card causes issues with my soundcard because they are on the same irq. And as far as I know there is no drivers for Toshiba's sd card reader. Other than that everything is fine.
