Tosh m35x freezes after screen saver or hibernate mode

I'm running Ubu 8.04 on my laptop. Everything works well until the screen saver kicks in or my laptop goes into sleep mode after 45 mins. Once I resume using the laptop, the computer freezes when I attempt to shutdown. If the laptop goes into sleep mode, the screen blacks out and locks up. Nothing wakes it up and no buttons function. I literally have to press the power button to shut off which I know is not good for the filesystem. Can anyone point me to a thread that deals with this problem or give me some advice. Thanks....
