I am running 2.6.18 self compiled kernel on a Debian Etch with a Vaio U1. I have had suspend to RAM working on various laptops before, and it was always a matter of some modules to be unloaded before suspend, etc.
In this case, I can suspend to RAM with no problem, if I am in X. It resumes like a dream, and all modules are taken care of, all I have to do is restart networking so that the PCMCIA WiFi card comes back to live.
The strange thing though that after the first resume, if I CTRL-ALT-Fx out to a console, the screen will be messed up in 3-4 seconds. First, I can see the lines, and the command prompt, and soon thereafter it starts to turn white and then back to black with little dots and nothing shows on the screen. If I CTRL-ALT-F7 back to my X, it works like a charm. If I suspend and Resume a few more times, I will lose X too, but in a way that the currently open window is working, but anything below it is useless.
Does anyone have a cure for this? Is this common with the new kernel?
No, I dont have a hibernate script, so that should be the issue. I am using the Radeon driver for this laptop, and to X it resumes fine, but the console is dead. You are saying it might be because I dont use a framebuffer? I had suspend working on other Vaio's with previous kernels, and this was never an issue.
Is there anybody out there with similar problems? This drives me mad, when I resume once, I can no longer use the Console which is out of X. I cannot even restart X, as when I log off of it, I am never able to restart it with startx, as I have no console.
Have you installed proprietary drivers fglrx/nvidia? They might have some problems. Have you tried this vbetools?
next you have to try and read a bit and install hibernate script from www.suspend2.net. It is easier to do all these different tricks like restart network... modules load and unload with hibernate script.
Also what you have been running is suspend (which is a older version).
If you want a bit of challenge you can try suspend2 www.suspend2.net which is a lot faster, reliable with more _useful_ features.
