Question suse 7.2 on my new dell inspirion 5100

hey everyone, newbie here...

i just got a brand new laptop from dell... and so i've repartitioned with partition magic 8.0 and i've installed suse 7.2

but for some reason it wouldn't let me install the x windows correctly so i had to just defaul to text only.

does anyone have any idea if there is anything specific about the dell inspirion 5100 notebook that would prevent x windows from working?

thanks in advance for any info...

yeah... i guess i could always go and get a copy of it... i'd rather just use what i have for now and possibly update it.

i found out that the dell LCD 1400x1050 i have needs some special attention when it comes to getting the x server setup.

Yes the Dell big screens need some babysitting. However, after having installed plenty of RH & Suse distros on plenty of Dell notebooks, I cna tell you that normally you can ALWAYS get X up running in 800 by 600 or something equally horrible. After that it's a matter of finding the right settings for your screen - do a find on Google with the terms Inspiron and XFree and you'll find plenty of X config examples. For me it's always been a matter of jsut trying several until you hit one that works.

Hope this helps

Tom
