startx isn't working fatal server error no screen found

i am currently trying to update my kernel from 2.4.31 to 2.6.13 in slackware 10.2 but i keep getting a fatal server error no screens found. i have tried running xorgsetup but i got the same error. then i tried going in and checking the xorg.conf file to see if the resolution was set correclty, but the configuration file looked exactally like my partners computer who has same type of laptop as me and is also running the 2.6.13 kernel. i can run startx in 2.4.31 but not in 2.6.13 does anyone know the root of this problem?

while tinkering with the xorg setup i was able to start the Gui by changing the resolution to 16 bit but when i did that the mouse does not work and of course the resolution is horrabily bad. It can start up at 16 and 8bit but it doesn't want to start up on 24 bit (True color)

If you post your xorg.conf perhaps one of us can spot the problem.

did you install all the 2.16 packages?
try lsmod with yoru 2.14 then with 2.16 and find the differences
if all else fails build yoru own 2.16 kernel
your xorg.conf file shouldn't have to change, if it works with 2.14 it should work with 2.16
