I finally decided to go/try Bodhi Linux 4.1 . Why ? Because it's based on Linux 14.04 and that is the version that(apparently)had the fix for the SIS graphic cards. You will say...why don't you install the (light)real thing, Kubuntu 14.04 if it contains the fix? I did try to install it. After 4 hrs, it seems I had maybe reach the half point so... I went to Google and got to a post of one guy complaining it did take him 9.5 hrs to install the thing. So, I did jump off the boat.
Bodhi 3.2 was based on Ubuntu 14.04. I couldn't find out if Bodhi 4.1 is also based on Ubuntu 14.04

Well...it's the worst ever. I'm stuck at 800 X 400 (the 400 can be reduce a bit but)I did learn a new way to modify res. so, I might go back to Antix

i told you the sis graphics stuff can be problematic.

you will need to start working on it systematically.
it won't help just throwing distros at it until one sticks.
i suggest going back to antiX and trying to SOLVE the problem.
check out that debian forums thread. it should give you an idea of what you're up against.

apart from that you seem to have quite a few misconceptions about how linux works.
do some reading.

Here is an answer from somebody who seems to be knowing what he was talking about. My actions followed accordingly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can easily tell you the source of problem:
In case you haven't realized, this laptop comes with an SiS integrated graphics, which is, I don't lie, very poorly supported in Linux. The situation is so bad it can be compared to VIA/S3 graphics and PowerVR-based Intel GMA, the latter one is particularly notorious.

Fortunately the one in your Acer (SiS 760) is easier to fix, read this thread in Ubuntu Forums for more info (post #1-2 are especially useful).

Now you have a few options:

Use Ubuntu 16.04 and apply fix as described in post #2, then hope for the best
Use Ubuntu 14.04 and its derivatives

If you're open to other distros or desktop environments:

Use other lightweight Ubuntu-based distros
Use simpler desktop environments (e.g. LXDE, Xfce, Enlightenment etc.)

Personally I'd go for Lubuntu or Xubuntu instead, Ubuntu is just too heavy for such a puny graphics chip.

always happy when people get some joy out of "too obsolete to run windows" hardware!

I had to erase my HDD because a botched eRecovery left my Windows XP laptop stuck on a recovery page. I didn't have the install or recovery discs so...here came Linux.

Mission Accomplished ! Lasr week, I did try to install Lubuntu 14.04 . I can't remember what exactly did happen but after a few minutes, it wasn't going anywhere. So, the followind day, I went with Kubuntu 14.04 and after 4 hrs of install time, I decided to let it go. Then came Linux Lite, Antix and...this afternoon I went back reading a post I did get from somebody at another site and... I was now almost sure Lubuntu as to do the trick. So, I went to install Lubuntu 14.04 . It took less than 30 min. When you were clicking on something, things would move right away ( of all the systems I did install since last week this one was sure giving the best feeling)...and BINGO! Right of the bat... I now have 1280 X 800 resolution. Amen.
