Screen configuration problems. ...I think.

This is the first time I've ever done anything with Linux, so I'm a complete noob. I've installed Debian Woody on my laptop (Sony Vaio PCG-954A), but can't get the GUI to work. When I try to startx, I get this:

"
(EE) VGA(0) : No Display subsection in Screen section "Screen 1" for depth/fbbpp 1/1
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
"

Is the problem in xf86, or do I have to go back to one of the install discs to fix it?

First off, Newbies and Debian don't mix. You really, really, don't want to start off with Deb.

Second off, it's your XF86Config file for sure, could you post it for us? Shouldn't be all that much trouble.

I couldn't find anything about your model and linux with the exception of a Russian link

I did find all sorts of info on Vaios & linux, do any of these models share the same video card as yours? See if they have their XF86Config file posted so you can see what works for them.

I don't know why you would want depths of 1 and 4, so I would start by commenting these two modes out. Put #'s in front of them.

Quote:
Depth 1
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"

Where's the rest of your XF86Config file?
