Screen brightness reset after restart on Compaq Presario

On my new Compaq Presario CQ71-413EZ Ubuntu 10.04 works like a charm, apart from a minor, yet annoying issue. The screen brightness can be adjusted, but the setting is not retained after restart. What can be done to solve this problem? I am using Nvidia G103M graphics with the Ubuntu-provided proprietary driver.

Just guessing, but perhaps a BIOS setting is taking control on reboot.

Is there a brightness setting in the BIOS?

Not actually in BIOS, but in the GNOME preferences. There is a slider for screen brightness in the power saving settings. I have set it to about 30 % and this time the value is persisting. I guess, the slider value takes precedence over the value set via the function keys. Under KDE in Slackware 13.1 the problem does not occur.
