RH9 on Pavilion ze4300

The boss has finally given me the ok to work with Linux. We bought RH9 and I'm trying to install on a Pavilion ze4300.

The install goes fine with no errors. I take all the defaults for a desktop install.

When it reboots I don't get the gui, instead I get what looks like a log in prompt that refreshes a few times then goes to a text graphic prompt that only says "Yes No" in a color box.

I'm assuming I have a problem with my video and for some reason the GUI can't load.

Where do I start on trouble shooting this?
I'm hoping there is a way from the prompt to start a module that will allow me to try different graphics settings (video card and monitor). The only way I know of to do it now is to completely reinstall and make my different choices during installation.

The manual says I can use the "X Configuration Too" by typing:
redhat-config-xfree86

Didn't do anything more than what I've described above.

Looking forward to some help.

I recenty installed RH9 on my pavilion 5202, and had the exact same video issues, down to the unreadable video error blue box. If you hit.. umm I think it was Yes, it'll give you a screen you can read, and if you hit no twice it like, drops out to the shell if I remember..

http://www.europe.redhat.com/documen.../s1-video.php3

I reread through the online redhat installation documentation and learned how to tinker with the redhat-config-xfree86 command a little, and got my GUI to work (well, mostly) after a little bit.

I recommend reading the docs closely and examining your monitor and driver specs VERY closely, as you can fry the screen if you mess up the refresh too much..

Good luck, and know you aren't the only one who's cursing HP while they try to install redhat!

Thanks Coyote,

I went to the link you provided but it gives instruction only for after you get into the GUI. (It did refer me back to the installation book but I've been there already).

I've tried every combination of yes an no and never see a text screen.

I gave up and DL'd SuSe and it installed flawlessly on the same laptop.

I appreciate your reply though.

Aff, the actual "redhat-config-xfree86" is the COMMAND to use within the shell, I figured if I pointed you at the docs you could dig a little deeper...

Glad to hear that SUSE is working for you, I'm not too happy with RH9 (especially with no official coverage anymore,) and I may check out SUSE tand give it a try too.. As soon as I finish the class I need to use it for..!
