Problem Installing 2.6.4 Kernel On My Toshiba M30

Hello guys,

I just got the Toshiba m30 last week, and installed debian woody because I like the apt package manager. However to take advantage of a lot of new things I would like to (a.k.a. wireless) I needed to the 2.2.20 kernel it comes with. However I seem to be running into a road block. I’ve compiled the 2.6.4 kernel and everything seems to work well from there however when I try to boot with the new kernel I get this error:

VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown block (3,2)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (3,2)

I've tried a couple things to try to resolve this. I appended this line in lilo.conf

Append="root=/dev/hda2"

Which changes the error replacing "302" with "hda2" and "(3, 2)" with "(0, 0)". I've looked at numerous WebPages concerning this error but haven't found anything that works.

Just to clarify ext2 is being compiled into the kernel not loaded as a module.

If anyone has some insight into this problem I would be greatly appreciative.

I think I had a kernel panic too until I added the cramfs support in the kernel. Check if it works for you

bye
