It works but it is extremly slow.

This problem is new (i know it since update to Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackelope)).

Got here before you with an external mouse
Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "USB_MOUSE"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "SendCoreEvents"
Option "Protocol" "imps/2"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Sensitivity" "0.4"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.8"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
Option "TapButton1" "1"
Option "TapButton2" "2"
Option "TapButton3" "3"
Option "SHMConfig" "on"
# Option "Sensitivity" "1"
# Option "MaxSpeed" "0.8"

EndSection

The unusual lines are the last 2 in each config section. As you see, I settled for the defaults on the touchpad. The mouse is very slow to begin with but speeds up. There are other mouse options ( e.g. Accel )
