I'm trying to get my Sony Clie PEG S300 to HotSync to Red Hat 9. Here are the steps I've done so far:

1. pressed hotsync to see what port my Sony was on using grep. Return value was ttyUSB0.

2. Executed command ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/pilot

I checked my PDA to see how it was hotsyncing. I've tried direct serial and USB to PC. Both fail.

Any ideas?

Can you give me a run down on the commands you used to find out what port your PDA was using? I'm having problems with my SJ30 right now. I can't seem to find where it's connecting.

I pressed the hotsync button and then issued this command:

dmesg | grep usb

The last line will show you the USB port your device is attached to.

First of all have you installed pilot-link?
Then you will want to install j-pilot at least this is the one I use since it works really well with my Sony Clie PEG-S320, even allows me to add other apps to my Clie.

Now once you have these two programs installed you will want to type this at a command prompt:

modprobe visor
chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB1 (christer) /dev/ttyUSB0 (rcarr)
dlpsh -p /dev/ttyUSB1 (christer) /dev/ttyUSB0 (rcarr) the hit the Hot Sync button on your Clie

You should hear your Sony Clie make the tone for a Hot Sync. This will drop you into a shell now type exit we now know that your Clie syncs with your PC.

You then will open up Jpilot, type at the run line or in a Xterm jpilot, this will open the jpilot program. Then go to -->File-->Preferences-->Settings and make sure that Serial Port says /dev/ttyUSB1 (christer) /dev/ttyUSB0 (rcarr) Now close the Jpilot program.

Now open up an Xterm and type pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 (christer) /dev/ttyUSB0 (rcarr) -b ~/.jpilot DON'T HIT ENTER YET.

Now hit the Hot Sync button on your Clie and now Enter.

Now your Clie and JPilot will be synchronized.

Now you can run Jpilot and all your info will be in Jpilot.

Now that you have Jpilot and the Clie synchronizing, you will see a Sync button to the left on Jpilot click this then click on Hot Sync on your Clie and everything will Synchronize.

PS. If using Red Hat or Mandrake I would put modprobe visor in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file so that when you reboot the Visor module will be loaded.

Ok, when I run this command:

dlpsh -p /dev/ttyUSB1

I can browse thru my palm in the terminal. However when I run this command:

pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -b -/jpilot

I get:

Time elapsed: 0:00:00
[prompt]$

Am I doing something wrong? I knwo it's connecting at this point from the earlier command but it doesn't seem to want to actually Sync.

Ok, I got it to work. I had some syntax errors in my command line entry.

It's all backing up right now to my /home/user/jpilot folder. This is awesome that it works.

Well, I did it the simple way by setting up the pilot link in root and it managed to hot-sync but the minute I switch to my user name account .. it just can't hot-sync. Is there something that i am missing out?

I have an SJ22 Clie and it is on /dev/ttyUSB1. I can use pilot-xfer to backup the whole thing with no problems at all. Gnome-pilot was able to retrieve the user info from the Clie on the same port (haven't tried to do a sync with it). However, KPilot and JPilot cannot connect to the Clie at all. KPilot does nothing, but sometimes JPilot is able to initiate the sync, but the Clie's HotSync applet says "Identifying User" then seems to hang when it gets to "Synchronizing." After a minute or so, the Clie gives an error saying it lost the connection with the desktop. Any advice?

I don't know if this will help but erase the .jpilot directory in your home directory then as your normal user issue the command pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -b ~/.jpilot as above. This should back up everything to the .jpilot directory, then open up jpilot and ensure that under file-->preferences has the serial device as /dev/ttyUSB1 then hit the Sync button on the jpilot main screen then hit the Hot-Sync button on the Clie.

thanks for the tips, but that's what i've already done. i can get the data from the palm to the computer, but i want to be able to actually "sync" and send things to the pilot also.

the JPilot "about" screen says it wasn't built with support for USB -- is that the problem? does linux treat /dev/ttyUSB(n) like a regular serial port, or a usb port?

I'm not sure what is going on ? Sorry, I guess I may be lucky with my Sony Clie I can actually "sync" if I put something in Jpilot it appears on my Clie and vice versa, I can even install programs.

I'm trying to sync a treo 90, and I tried all the steps, and I checked which port the device is on, but dlpsh -p /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 returns:

Port not connected, sleeping for 2 seconds, 0 retries..

Device not found on /dev/usb/ttyUSB1, Did you hit HotSync?

Unable to bind to port: /dev/usb/ttyUSB1
Please use --help for more information

I'm using kpilot, but all the other steps work anyway, do I have to ave jpilto? Is there any advice?

When you enter the command dlpsh -p /dev/usb/ttyUSB1, press your enter button then Hot Synch on the Treo.
