Question Problems with GRUB

Hi.

I had Fedora Core 1 running on my Toshiba Satellite Pro m15-s405. It was wonderful. However, the laptop came with WinXP pre-installed and all that and for x reason I had to use the Recovery CD.. after that was done, I rebooted the computer and I got the GRUB command prompt... I tried:

> makeactive
> rootnoverify (hd0)
> chainloader +1
> boot

and it just got me back to the same place...

does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

pandasonic,

(hd0) needs to be (hd0,0) if you want it to boot from the mbr, I believe. The number after the (hdn, ) identifies the partition used by the os. My grub entry is:

rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

I am interested in your results because this weekend I was going to use the recovery disks on my M10-S405. I am curious as to why they didn't write a new mbr.

You overall are correct, but let me correct something:
(hd0) is the MBR, where grub is right now. That's why it took you in circles.
(hd0,0) is the XP partition's bootsector.
BTW, those recovery disks from various vendors are going to differ, so don't be surprised if yours does something different. These disks are also very inflexible, search the net on how to make your own real installation disk. The Windows setup files tend to be on the hard drive someplace, you can copy them to cd and use them to install.

Please clarify what you mean by this:

Perhaps you are requesting a dual boot configuration?
You want to boot XP from (hd0,0) and Linux from (hd0,1)?

(hd0) got him back to the same place because it's the MBR, where grub is right now. The bios loads grub from MBR>GRUB chainloads itself from (hd0), the MBR...again & again...

Hey.. yeah, that's what i meant: everytime i tried to boot hd0 it went back to the MBR which is Grub

Anyhow, i used a WinXP setup cd to override the MBR and then I used the recovery disks again

Thanx
