Presario V5000US

I got a presario laptop that is giving me a big problem - at times the screen 'blacks out' when its switched on. This prevents me to view what is goin' on on ma laptop and can't do anything to take off the black screen, except to switch off the whole thing. My programs seem to be all there and functioning, but I had decided just to install windows again just in case. But i never get far because the screen blacks out. When I had reported it to HP online, they requested that i send off the laptop to them because of a possible internal error, but its a US model and im from the UK, so i wouldnt dare do such a thing, with the shipping costs and all. Im just wondering if anyone has any idea or clue how i could perhaps solve this problem, before I consider perhaps buying a new laptop.

When the screen "goes black" can you see a faint image at all? Sounds like you may have an inverter/lcd bulb problem. Try shining a bright light on the screen when it "blacks out" and see if you can see any text/graphics. If you can then its cause your lcd bulb isn't lighting up.

To fix this issue you will either have to replace the inverter(most likely) or the lcd bulb.
