Been a while since the post. Guess it wasn't so urgent after all.
Try hitting the enter key once in a while.

Not sure what your problem is? Did you say you downloaded and replaced your XF86Config with one you found on the net? XF86Config file you posted the original generated by your installation?

Also, looks like you tried to increase your resolution by adding 1440x900 to Depth 16 and the end of Depth 24 but your Default is 24.
So as you have it now it's going to boot Depth 24 at 1024x768.

Depth 16
Modes "1440x900""1024x768""800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768""800x600""1440x900:
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"

however, your saying it's just displaying dots so is probably a video driver or monitor sync problem. Is that the correct Video card and monitor you actually have? There's probably more wrong with this file too but it's getting late....

do you see the nvidia splash screen load up after you do startx. did evrything go ok with the driver install?

if you see the screen come up with the nvidia logo, that means your driver is working fine. if you don't see it your driver is not installed. I personally don't see anything wrong with your xorg. If you see the logo and then nothing shows on the monitor , it is from the vertical and horizontal refresh rates. did you change those from the files you found online? when did your screen go blank? I am not understanding everything. Are you saying it worked at first, then you logged on and changed something and then it didn't work? I would say to compare the horizontal and vertical rates with the ones that the vesa driver is using. use the same rates. Is that a laptop or a desktop. You are saying you are using RH9, did you install the kernel sources before you install the nvidia driver. I remember i had to do that when i used to run RH 9 long long time ago

From what I know so far, I am going more for the monitor sync(the rates). If you have changed a lot on your file and you don't know what you changed, I would say start from scratch with the vesa xorg, to be on the safe side. Do not EVER use someone elses xorg file for your configuration. Everyone's system is different. When it comes to monitors you can really fry your screen with faulty rate. you can change stuff like resolution, mouse, driver, stuff like that. Change your rates only if you know what they are supposed to be. it is almost impossible to guess and it is dangerous.

so everything works perfect until you try to shut your X?

go to your /etc/X11 and see if you have xorg.conf.old or xorg.conf-vesa, sorry you are runninf xf86. see if you have any other xf86Config files and post what they are. Don't post the actual files, just the names. If everything is working fine until you try to shut off X, I would ask the same question in the RedHat forum, if I were you. You cannot go to text mode after you try to shut X? try pressing ctrl-alt-backspace when you are in X, see what happens. Also when it does the funny looking color stuff, try to do the same. I hope that will get you to text mode so we can get some error messages that may pop up.

one more thing what kernal if you mean the nvidia driver yes i install it then read the manual for the tuing in the XF86Config file then i get the XF86Config the one i have from the net--> don't worry about it anymore, your driver is working fine, it is irrelevant now. BTW It's 3:30 AM here in US, and I may go to bad in like 30 mins.

please try to write in sentences. spelling is not as important as breaks are. I did not understand when you are referring to
Quote:

i don't understand which one is the original file, the one with the vesa driver or the one with the nvidia driver? If everything works with fine with the vesa driver, erase the one with the nvidia driver and use the one with the vesa driver, only do the changes described in the NVIDIA README- Load "GLX" and erase the Load "Dri", and I believe there was one more thing, just read the readme. After you do that, startx again and try init 3. if you get same error, i cannot help. If after all that stuff doesn't work, I would ask my question in RedHat forum, since that seems to be RH problem. So you cannot shut your RH properly?

OK I got you, I think that I understand why it's not working now. load the one that is 800x600 and I'll try to help you to try to fix it. I assume it's not working because the one you used for the net is not for your system. post the one that is 800x600 here as well, so I can see it. erase the one you are using now(or change its name), and change the name of the 800x600 one so you''ll be using that one instead.
