modem connections on a laptop

Dear all,

One of the LPI Level 1 Objectives (http://www.lpi.org/en/obj_102.html) says:
Quote:
1.112.4 Configure Linux as a PPP client
Modified: 2003-Mar-17
Maintainer: Mark Miller
Weight: 3

Description: Candidates should understand the basics of the PPP protocol and be able to configure and use PPP for outbound connections. This objective includes the definition of the chat sequence to connect (given a login example) and the setup commands to be run automatically when a PPP connection is made. It also includes initialisation and termination of a PPP connection, with a modem, ISDN or ADSL and setting PPP to automatically reconnect if disconnected.
Key files, terms, and utilities include:
/etc/ppp/options.*
/etc/ppp/peers/*
/etc/wvdial.conf
/etc/ppp/ip-up
/etc/ppp/ip-down
wvdial
pppd
I would like to practice with several laptops. All have winmodems. Is there a method to get pppd and wvdial to work using the serial interfaces?
Any suggestions?
Could you please recommend a HOWTO or a good web site?

Regards.

First read about winmodems (google for the word)...they're really not genuine modems imo, since they lack something normal modems have so in english, you need special drivers for them, and that's the problem with them.

Sorry, but I didn't asked about how to make the modems work. I asked about the serial (external) interfaces.
