Looking for Information

Hello everyone I am new to this forum and have a few questions about installing Linux on a laptop. I have a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop with an AMD 64 Athlon processor that I would like to install Linux on. First I would like to know is this laptop a good candidate for Linux and which Linux OS would be best for a new comer to the Linux OS?

The only stumbling block I see for a new user would be the Broadcom based wireless, it may require ndiswrapper with the XP driver, since the native drivers are not known to be the best. I would suggest starting with Fedora 8, it should have no problem detecting most of the hardware in it, with the possible exception of the wireless. The wireless may work out of the box, but I wouldn't count on it.

As long as you have another computer with an internet connection, there's no Linux problem that can't be overcome. That and uh... a bit of persistence.

Might I suggest a good online read to get you started with a Linux OS?

Introduction to Linux: A Hands on Guide

Like anything in life, if your foundation is not good, you will have trouble forever afterwards.
