lsb_release -a might do the trick.

AFAIK, eeePCs use a modified version of Xandros.

It almost certainly shows up - I'd guess at some version of Xandros. As soon as are familiar with Ctrl+t (calling up a terminal on Xandros for Eee), you can also try uname -a to get an impression, especially about the kernel used; everything else is in textfiles in /proc, but handle those files with care (only view them with cat file). It's an interesting thing to do, but don't expect to understand a lot at first.

Edit: lurko's right - though the information may be part of an error message (lurko, I posted at the same time...)

I put regular Ubuntu 8.10 on my old eee. It ran fine, and installed easily. Only thing that required any "work" was the wireless device, which took about 2min to get up and running.

Now I have an Aspire One w/ Ubuntu 8.10(came w/ Windows XP), and it also runs perfectly.

I run Ubuntu 8.10 on my Asus Eee 701 as well - using the Array.org kernel, thus no trouble whatsoever with wireless or other hardware (save the display switcher). Works great.
