i have a hp-6530s laptop.
i was using xp and considered to migrate to linux. so i downloaded the iso file of debian linux 5.01 with kernel 2.6.20. after installation i did not get any sound. i have also a asus t500 modem which debian could not detect. any expert can tell me what will be the procedure to solve these two problems.

Hi I have a HP 6530b probably we have similar hardware in our notebooks with the modem I can't help you I've no need for it yet. Assumed you have a hda intel you may look at this thread. Probably you need a newer kernel for your wireless card just download from unstable repository linux-2.6.28 and get firmware from here

I advice you to download new kernel and to rebuild it. You may try Ubuntu linux if rebuilding kernel process is difficult for you.

Smile Using Simply Mepis 8 on HP/Compaq 6530b

I have been using Simply Mepis on my HP/Compaq 6530b for about four months and overall I am quite happy.

I installed Wcid as a wireless manager and this has made using my wireless very easy.

The on-board speakers do not work yet but external speakers plugged into the headphone jack work fine. I am still working on sound.

The external monitor does not work yet and I am working on that. I do not think that this laptop is totally supported in Linux yet, but update are coming out regularly.

Best of luck
