I've been trying to install Mandrake Linux 9.2 on Acer 1353 LM with 15 inch XGA TFT (1024x768), integrated S3 Savage8, 64MB shared memory.
With every reasonable/imaginable choice of drivers the X system refuses to start. I only get error messages like "No devices detected", "Fatal server error", "No screens Found". I had no trouble with the installation otherwise and everything not needing X seems to work fine.
I've gone through the net, no solutions so far. Anybody there had better "luck" with this laptop?
I have found a temporary solution(?): chose vesa(!) driver and Aspire 77s monitor from the MDK 9.2 list. Now the X is working (a bit slow, starts with blinking etc), I'm using gnome and galeon, only minor problems so far...
Next: waiting for the driver KM400 from VIA for MDK. They have one for RedHat, but I am not able to install RH, because with any boot parameters the RH installation garbages the screen (same problem with Debian installation on this Aspire 1353LM).
Hi JohanS,
I also have the same Laptop and Installed MDK 9.2. I am experiencing tons of problems... Lets start a quick list
-->Very, very, very poor performance. My old 400Mhz AMD desktop worked a lot faster with MDK 9.1
-->Modem doesn't work
-->I haven't managed to activate the middle botton of the touchpad
-->Fubction keys for brithness, and volume(Fn+>, fn+^, Fn+<,..) also does't work
-->No acpi support, either apm (batter information) is available!?!?!
Have you tried MDK 9.1? Do you believe in better luck ther?
Have you experienced/solved any of these problems?
Do you know of other releases to work better??
Maybe compile the kernel from source could solve any of this problems??
Hi,
Same probs here (except never tried the modem). Most of the time I'm using a Logitech usb mouse (it works perfectly). People say that mdk 9.2 was not quite mature (I went through all the known things like the stupid and unnecessary bug with the menu update), but I had no time to try out the 9.1 and now my life is set up under 9.2. In general I like the mdk distro, the biggest problem with this hardware is the performance, see also http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=107934 "RH9 install: kernel on CD throws Acer Aspire 1350 display out of sync"
I have just bought an Acer Aspire 1353LC and am trying to get Mdk9.2 to work. So far sound, shut down and scrolling are not working and just now the touchpad completely dropped out.
Johan S. - are you by any chance from Sweden? Would you mind talking to me over the phone and going thru maybe some basics? You can reach me at andreas.hedfors (at) home.se.
hello guys! Im having ACER 1355LM and have the same problem with the s3 km400 driver...but im happy coz i found a solution! dont ask how and why, maybe its luck...heres what u should do
in the display settings set resolution 1024x768
in the advanced configure your monitor type to Aspire 77s
and in video card configure it to 'VESA driver (generic) driver vesa
(i left blank the memory size)
I've installed the Mandrake 10 on my new Acer Aspire 1350.
First I had problem with installation because acpi. I used this installation string:
boot: linux apm=off acpi=off nomce
and the installation is completed with no errors in graphical mode.
When I start for 1 time the new linuxbox, the computer stay blocked : I can run the system only in single user mode. When the computer stay blocked, i can only reset the computer.
I've also got an Acer Aspire 1353lc and I'm running Debian SID.
And almost everything works.
As you described there's no support for the specific s3 chip in the laptop but running vesa works fine (hoping for support in the next release of X window system)
But I've got one major problem though, I can not get the pcmcia to work. The computer hangs when it's activated. So i cant run my wlan under linux :/
Solutions anyone?
