I have an ACER Aspire 1310 running Mandrake 9.1 with no real problems.

The only issues I have found are :

1. Haven't got sound working, but to be fair I haven't tried so I only know that it isn't working by default.

2. Linux can't run the laptop at reduced power (e.g. the CPU always runs at full power, even when doing anything). I believe this is fixed in the 2.5 kernel and there is a patch available for Mandrake which I haven't got to work. This means that the laptop gets pretty hot and has very short battery life (about 20 minutes).

3. When running on battery, the display shows graphically (under KDE) how much power the battery has left, but the timer always reports 0 minutes battery left (and I had to switch from apm to acpi power control in lilo).

Everything else works very nicely thank you.

Googling for "Acer mandrake" picks up a few useful sites.

Iain.

Hi,
I have the same laptop as you and am happily using ARK-linux.
laptop batterypower etc will not work yet with current kernels.
I hope when the new 2.6 kernel arrives this will work.

So no matter what linux distro you will use, power indication will not work. I can know I tried a lot!

One thing you need to change after install of ark to get sound working is the used sounddriver.
At default it will install ALSA snd-intel8x0 driver in /etc/modules.conf.
Change this to i810_audio and all will work fine

They use a 2.23.pre kernel wich work very very dtable on this laptop. Other linux distro's will hang on boot due to bad SCSI detection. It seems 2.23 solves this.

So, I would go for www.arklinux.com. For support of this come to #arklinux at freenode.

Good luck!!!

With further testing on my Aspire 1310 I've found battery life to be 1.5 - 2 hours, not 20 mins as I previously said.

I also got the sound working OK with the command
aumix -v100 -S
