Linux and digital output

Hi guys! Please help me with this problem...

I've installed on my laptop ALSA 0.9.8 plus xxms plugin. My card is a IEC598 with coaxial spdif output...Now...I managed to set xine to use my spdif output, and it works with my DVDs, but how can I tell Linux (Red Hat 9.0 ) to use digital output everytime from any application? I also noticed that: even in xine, if a play a CD or an mp3 it defaults to the analog output, when I watch a DVD, instead, it goes tru the digital port...how come?!? Please help me..... Thanks, Marco

I have no experience with Xine or the IEC598, but if you have a look at the Alsa documentation page for your card/driver there might be some useful information, like a module parameter you can pass to the driver to set the default output to SPDIF. Don't hold me responsible for it though...
