kernel 2.6.8 no more pcmcia

I'm a bit confused with how to get pcmcia cards running once again now that I've updated the kernel to 2.6.8 from 2.4.26 on a slackware 10.0 laptop. I wonder if anyone can help - but go easy on me I am a newbie.

Try starting a teminal and log into said terminal as root.

type "/sbin/modprobe yenta_socket" without the quotes. That should make the computer see any devices in the PCMCIA slot(s).

then type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart" without the quotes. This should cause the PCMCIA service to reload with the hardware.

If you're trying to use a network card in the PCMCIA bus, type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart" without quotes and that should get your wired network card going.

If it refuses to detect the card in the boot process, add a line to /etc/modules.conf to the effect of "alias eth0 pcnet_cs" without the quotes to get the module to load on boot. You might need to change the pcnet_cs to a different setting for your network card, but that's over my head.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply.

Actually, I figured out what to do late last night. I had tried what you suggested - "modprobe yenta_socket" - and that didn't work - the module couldn't be found. After doing much more research I figured I needed a more drastic solution - recompiling the kernel to include support for yenta. That worked by giving me access to that module. I guess I must have missed it the first time through when I compiled 2.6.8.

The odd thing is, a compact flash adapter inserted in the pcmcia slot worked automatically with no tweaking needed before I had this problem (this time around I was trying to get it to see a wireless network card). I guess the pcmcia slot must be treated differently depending on what you stick into it.

Thanks!
