installing debian into acer travelmate 370

Hi, I am a first time user and I got a problem in installing debian into my acer travelmate 370 using a dvd/cdrw drive (firewire connection). The apt-configuration in the debain installation program somehow could not auto-detect my drive with this default path "/dev/cdrom". What can I do from here to get my drive detected ?
