I guess I will start with what DID NOT work.
1) The F11 and F12 keys normally adjust the display brightness. These keys have no effect when running Lubuntu. In addition, the display brightness is set to a very low level (almost unreadable) after the first reboot. The only way that I found to adjust the display brightness is manually. For example, this command sets the display at a setting of 250 (out of a maximum of 255):
Code:
sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness <<< 250
Fortunately, the brightness setting is maintained after rebooting once it is set manually.
2) I encountered strange GPU hangs when using a dedicated 4 GB swap partition on the disk. I did not really dig into what was causing this. If you use the default partitioning scheme (taking over the entire disk with 1 partition (excluding the EFI partition), then I did not experience GPU hangs.
Other than the brightness adjustment keys not working, everything works as expected. The installer successfully configured wired and wireless networking, video settings, sound, and touchpad. I was able to connect an external projector to the laptop using the HDMI port. When plugging in headphones, the sound automatically switched over from the internal speakers to the headphones. Essentially everything else worked as expected. I measured power use, and it should be easy to get 5 hours of light computing running on the battery. Overall, it is a very nice computer with a 15 inch display for well under $300.
My full write up is on my
blog.
If anyone has any ideas of what could be causing GPU hangs, please let me know.
