Hi osbie,

Thanks for the reply.

The site says that i have to update the kernel version.
But i dont know how to update the kernel.

The kernel version is

[root@santhosh santhosh]# uname -a
Linux santhosh 2.6.12-12mdksmp #1 SMP Fri Sep 9 17:43:23 CEST 2005 i686 Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz unknown GNU/Linux

where can i get the updated kernel... and where can i get the complete instructions for updating the kernel.

I've never run mandriva but i would assume i you just do an update it will find a new kernel as well as several other updates
To upgrade automatically use MandrivaUpdate or urpmi. The verification
of md5 checksums and GPG signatures is performed automatically for you.

All packages are signed by Mandriva for security. You can obtain the
GPG public key of the Mandriva Security Team by executing:

gpg --recv-keys --keyserver pgp.mit.edu 0x22458A98

you might look over on the distro-> mandriva forum about how to do the updates.

found this there http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=470217

On the notebook I have beside me at work, the PCM volume works for the built-in speakers but not the headphone jack, whereas the Master volume controls both (and the headphone volume of course is for the headphone jack). So with that unit I can mute PCM to mute the speakers.

I think in this case you're limited to the options available to you by the driver. You could try using various volume control GUIs, I've heard of situations where a control didn't show up on alsamixer but was present on gnome-volume-control or aumix, for example.

I have checked with almost all the volume controls. No Use.
Now am searching for a way to disable the inbuilt speaker hardware itself.

Im assuming you don't have Smart or you would have been updated.
and first, does the new auto updater not work or have you not run it? What do you have for Yast sources?

This is how i used to do it before i got Smart.
so, YasT (BTW current Kernel is 2.6.16.21-0.13, I use SMP ver.) do a refresh of sources then -view packadges - then select zzz all at the bottom, then in the menu (3rd one over i think, been awhile since i yasted) option-> all on this list-> upgrade if newer version exists. That should do it, as well as all components. or just do a shearch for kernel. the key is the refresh. do that in 'install sources' check refresh on all of them.
