You've got alot to learn my friend! let me help you out. As a beginner I would recommend Ubuntu. It is pretty user friendly, and you can download a live CD, this enables you to test it out without installing it. Once you decide that you do indeed want to install it you can select the "install" option from within the live o.s. Don't worry about formatting because the installer will help you with that. Linux does not use NTFS, although many distro's can read/write to ntfs partitions. Also the drives are not labelled with letters as in windows, instead its hda, or sda for the first physical drive, then hdb or sdb and on up for other physical drives. Partitions are identified with numbers -hda 0, hda 1, etc. Study up on that first, because you need to understand it so that you install Unbuntu on the correct partition or you will wipe your windows partition and lose everything on it. Download the live cd, burn it and boot into the live o.s.; play around for a while, get familiar with the partitions until you are comfortable with where your windows installation sits, figure out if you like Unbuntu then get back to me and I'll help you with the next steps- or you can just bail if you want to with no harm done.

When you want a dual (multi) boot-system, you have to study bootloaders also ! (Grub, lilo, SBM, . . )
