Question how do I apply a patch or a new driver

I have been trying to configure my Laptop (HP Pavilion ze4300) to run RH 9 Shrike. It is up and running, but with a lot of Generic this and that. I have found a lot of good info, but do not know how to use it.

Everyone talks about updating the kernel. (have a good how to on that), and apply this patch and that patch, with this driver or that driver. Well How?

How do I apply a new driver or add a patch?
Is it in the kernel?
For instance the patch for the radeon mobility u1
Where do I put it?
What does it do?
If someone could explain how to add a patch I would be on my way.

Thanx
