Code:
Xorg -configure
I found that there was no HorizSync and VertRefresh so I added these lines

Oh, SIS, there is your problem. The drivers for SIS chipsets are really bad, even Windows drivers for SIS chipsets suck. When I had an Acer with that chipset I used Vesa, since the SIS drivers weren't going to give me hardware acceleration anyway.
I agree that sis is a terrible video chipset with terrible drivers, and you're probably right. Still, I think that the flickering may be due to a misconfiguration.
Frustration builds as I'm looking for answers to problems configuring my linux box. I want to be resourceful and not bother folks, but then I come across threads like this with no solution, even though the title says it is [SOLVED]. Is it possible to remove that from this thread, since there is no solution presented?
Ditto....will somebody remove the "solved" from this thread?
We have an old emachines laptop here and upon the very first screen we get erratic screen flickering with a stalled install (on the first of 9 disks)....the install fails here for this particular machine.
Prior to the reading of this thread we did a netinstall (pretty neat); it got much farther as I was able to give username, password, etc. but the whole process stops at 1%
we tried changing memory, processor, replaced a suspect capacitor, tried a pci vid card, clicked our heels, crossed our toes, ad infinitum and nauseaum....
Sure would like to see this thread go a tad further but if the answer is windows....well, we have a bunch of that antique furniture around here so I won't be waiting for this thread but thought I'd put my two-cents in about fabyouless 's request to continue the thread.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN I WOULD EVER ADVISE ANYONE TO DONATE FUNDS TO A MICROSOFT PRODUCT (OR ANY CONGLOMERATE PROFITEERING CORPORATION).....WE LOVE LINUX HERE! In all my 50+ years of existence on this planet this is the only foundation I ever donated to. You guys rock!
