Fedora Core on a Compaq Presario 2100 series laptop

Hello everyone. I just wanted to point out that I've written an article on how to install fedora on a Compaq Presario 2100 series laptop , so if that's something you're interested in doing you can save yourself a bit of time and aggravation by checking out my write-up on the subject.

Cheers,
TAE

Great article dude...

are anymore going to be written? I've got that laptop (and while I love the hardware specs for the price I paid...I'm kicking myself for not researching the linux angle).

Very nice article. Just thought you might like to know,
everything in our article also applies to the HP ZE4240.
Possibly the entire 4200 series. The two differences
between your laptop and the 4240; the 4240 came with
a 30g hdd, and only 256m ram.

I have seen _dozens_ of requests for help regarding
linux installs on HP 4200 series machines. This article
probably would help many of those people.

Don't you guys find it sad that HP's been pushing the fact that they are Unix/Linux friendly in some ways but then they put out hardware like this that's just a HUGE Pain in the *ss to get linux on?

I don't know about you guys, but I sent a LONG letter about when I got a request for comments on their tech support and my laptop.

I mean, I LOVE this machine...I totally love the power/price ratio and finally I have a laptop that rivals a lot of desktops I work with...but getting a fully operational linux system on it is like pulling teeth!! And there's no way a total newbie could have done it with ANY distro.

well the article on configuring fedora 1 on presario 2100 is good just to get the linux thing on... but beleive me working with it is really a trouble... the problems i faced with kernel 2.6.2 are like ..the touchpand wouldnt respond to clicks.. the kernel did not support sound.. n these two things are really the most important thing i suppose.
**pls help me get over these problems because i cant think of a system without a propper working mouse and sound**

I'd suggest either Mandrake 10 (If you don't want to enable 3D acceleration) or Gentoo (if you do) on this machine.

I've just put in the latest Gentoo version and OH wow! Amazing stuff
(In the Gentoo forums there is a detailed 3d-howto thread for the IGP320M of this machine...I'll try it next week)

As for the touchpad problem:

- did you install the Synaptic driver for X? Did you configure it? I have it working, not only perfectly, but its more configurable than it is in WinXP
