ACPI & smartd on Dell 5100 under Fedora ??

I have installed Fedora 1 on my Dell Laptop 5100, three things which I noticed immediately was

1. The ACPI was not working ( Battery meter did not work & when I shutdown the laptop , it didn't turn itself off automatically .. it waits at the "power down" message .. and i have to manually shut the laptop)

2. When I closed the lid of the laptop , I could see the LCD and the bulb turning off (which is a good thing considering RedHat 9 didn't let me do that with the latest kernel)

3. I keep on getting the "smartd Failed" error during booting and shutting down. I have Hitachi DK23EB - 40. ( I did check the BIOS , but i couldn't find where to check whether SMART was enabled or not )

I went through this forum and could fix the ACPI problem by just appending the acpi=on in the grub.conf file under the /boot/grub directory .. after which the battery meter worked as well as the shutdown but the LCD and the BULB don't turn off now whenever i close the lid of the laptop :-(

I have DELL C400 next to me, where everything worked using FEDORA 1 without me doing a single damn thing.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
