FC6 Install on IBM z60m - Dual Boot from USB

I'm hoping someone could help me out with this... not sure its even possible.

I'm trying to install Fedora Core 6 on my IBM Thinkpad, but I want it to boot from an external hard drive via USB. I'm not sure if I need to Partition a drive or if I can just install on the ExHD.

I want it so that I can boot WinXP from my laptop without the ExHD plugged in and then boot to Fedora with the ExHD plugged in.

Has anyone done this before? Have any tips or step-by-step instructions?

Thanks

B

Does the IBM z60m laptop support booting from the external USB hard drive???

If yes then install Linux and the bootloader to this external hard drive and set vthe BIOS to boot first to the external hard drive.

If not then you can still install linux to the external hard drive and install the bootloader to this drive also, but do not set the BIOS to boot from the external hard drive first. Instead follow the instructions found here starting from "You may choose to let another boot loader handle the install";

http://www.redhat.com/advice/tips/dualboot.html

Note since this is an external USB drive the partition will be something like /dev/sdX not /dev/hdX.

In either case attach the external USB hard drive to the laptop before powering on.

This is great advice. I went ahead and installed on the external hard drive and switched the BIOS to boot from USB first. But now when I boot it says missing operating system.

Now, obviously I just installed the OS... so does this mean the laptop won't boot from the external hard drive?

Thanks

It is your laptop not mine

With the USB hard drive attached power on the laptop and check the BIOS, if the laptop supports booting from the device it will be list. In many cases the name of the USB device is used.

Which version of Linux did you install and how (brief details please)???
