Question fc3 and dial up?

OK i just set up my inspiron 1100 to dual boot between win xp sp2 and linux fc3. everythings running fine except that the inspiron series doesn't seem to have a dial up modem. its some sort of chip set thing. thats fine for the windows half but not for the linux half. is there anyway to get it to notice the emulated modem or do i just use windows?

ill put up more info if needed. (you might need to tell me how to get it.)

Have a look at the linmodems site. Download and run scanmodem, and it should tell you if it might work or not.

yup i actually had that downloaded on the windows side of the machine but couldn't figure out how to get it to the linux fc3 half. then i remembered that i have a CD burner.

anyways the window driver says that it is a broadcom modem and scanmodem said among other things
"The soft modem subsystem operates under a controller
8086:24c6 82801DB ICH4
capable of supporting under linux AT LEAST modem subsystem chips from manufacturers:
Broadcom
AgereSystems
Conexent
Intel
Smartlink

It has a broadcom codec BCM64"

there was something about a "SmartLink slmodem"

i would put more but the only things i had to write with was a magic marker and a post-it note.

oh and i didn't get that kononse thing. it's because i don't know how to get there. I'm a

Well, you might want to get to know the console, because you are going to have to use it to get your modem working. In the scanmodem directory you will see several files, one of them called driver compiling or something. Have a read of that and see how you go. You will need to get the headers for your kernel, or get the source and compile the headers yourself. Download one of the smartlink drivers (if you have a >2.6.10 kernel then there are specific drivers you need to get to make the thing work) If you have windows and linux on the same machine, its normally a good idea to create a fat partition that both os's can use, saves a lot of mucking around. Good luck.

like your sig short101, thats how i got the slmodem i needed, slmodem-2.9.9-alsa. the linuxmodems.org already had a copy.

as to the fat file system. i didn't think of that before i formatted the drive and i really don't want to mess with it again. my xbox has a 250 gigabyte hdd in it so ill just ftp my files around. i knew there was a reason that i configured fc3 to be a personal computer but put all the server stuff on.

if you tell me how to get to konolse i will start learning it.
