Display problems in debian

Hi

I have used linux for a quite long time now and used several linux distributions and decided now that i wanted to use debian. I installed debian and all the way it was going nicely until i entered the x windows. I got 800x600 resolution which is not a very acceptable resolution for me. I though it might be a configuration problem, so i ran xf86config to try to correct it, but i had no luck with it.

I have also tryed to install debian over again, but i still get 800x600 eventhough i choose 1024x768 with 60hz as the default. I have checked that windows is using 1024x768 and 60hz and it works without problems. I havent had problems with the other linux distributions with this resolution. After configuring yet another time with xf86config i get the option to change to 1024x768, so i do that, but it doesnt display the resolution correctly. Im using debian sarge 3.1. Its an offical DVD.

How can i fix this to get it to display the resolution 1024x768 correctly? I have an ATI radeon card on a laptop which is Intel based. I have 512MB RAM which should be more than enough. Changing to another distro is not what i wanna do at all, so please dont suggest that.

Any help would be greatly appericiated.

run the command:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
instead of xf86config
Running xf86config only generates the XF86config file, _not_ XF86config-4 file, which is what the later versions of XFree86 look for.

thanks for the help. didnt know that XFree86Config-4 had to be changed or was the one that newer Xfree86 is using. It works now.
