display disappears after splash - ubuntu/t40 laptop

I am trying to install ubuntu 8.04 on an IBM t40 laptop. The install seemed to go fine but when it boots, the screen goes blank right after the splash screen. I have tried the different LCD/VGA options in the BIOS.

You might want to try giving some specifics about your hardware and xorg.conf, otherwise we haven't a clue. No crystal ball work here.
