Dell studio 1558 crashing after upgrade to kernel 4.1.6

After updating my slackware-current 64bit laptop last night the kernel has been upgraded from 3.18.11 to 4.1.6. The laptop now keeps crashing and I can't see any kernel messages which might give a hint why. I need to force power off to restart it.

At first I thought it was to do with the i8k module since conky caused an error in that module, but I still have the crashes without i8k loaded.

The cpu is Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 460 @ 2.53GHz and the graphics card is a radeon mobility 5430. I am using slackware current with 64 bit kernel 4.1.6, X.Org X Server 1.17.2.

The system can crash at any time, it could be just after logging into my X desktop or it could be 30 minutes later - I haven't had it running more than an hour yet. I have tried leaving it on a text console so that I can see any kernel messages but it never seems to crash then, only when X is running so it might be graphics related.

edit: I am using the open source radeon driver, not the proprietary AMD one

I don't know what to try since I can't see any kernel messages when it crashes with X running so I am hoping someone else had a problem with a similar system and knows what it is

Luckily I was able to SSH into the laptop after it had crashed and get info from dmesg. It looks like when my bluetooth mouse was disconnecting the kernel was going wrong. I am able to reproduce the problem by unplugging my USB bluetooth dongle while the bluetooth mouse is in use.
