Dell Precision Workstation M3800

I bought a Dell workstation m3800 that has came pre installed with Ubuntu. I don't want Ubuntu on there, but I got it on there thinking if it works with a Linux distro it should do fine with another. I want to put arch on there, so I am going to take out the HDD and put a new SSD, and I am going to try and put arch on there. Any advice or input would be much appreciated.

A bunch of money for a toy.

The good news is that the system has linux on it. This tends to make it easier for you.

For the most part the question becomes uefi/secure boot. I'd think that you could disable that in bios and simply install the distro you want. Just follow the instructions for your distro.

As far as not wanting to have to re-install OSs every so often, and wanting stability, Spatry's Cup of Linux is a very good way to go. This distro is known to work right out of the box (other than possible WiFi issues that can be fixed easily enough).

Instead of having to re-install it, as with most Linux distros (even the LTDs), it is a "Running Distro" that gets updates forever and ever (as long as the distro lives so to speak). It is a fully set up version of Manjaro which is Arch based.

Most people do not like Arch because one has to be a tech pro to use it, much less install it, and it being on the cutting edge all the time will break all the time too. But Manjaro holds back updates until they become stable so that one is as close to the bleeding edge as one can get yet stable at the same time. OK so every now and then something breaks but it usually get fixed pronto.

And yes being Manjaro is Arched based it still takes a tech pro to set it up and get it running for daily use, and this is where Spatry comes in. He has set the distro up to run right out of the box for newbies, with all sorts of UI programs. Of coarse there is still the need to personalize the settings with in the distro, such as placement of bars and color preferences, etc...

Back when XP lost its security update support I came over to the Linux world and went through many a disto trying to figure out which one was better and for sure, having ran XP for 13 years, I wanted one that would last a long time to boot. Being I am/was a newbie I also needed a distro that was user friendly for sure. Well Sparty's Cup of Linux turned out to be all that I had ever wanted out of a Linux OS and more than I ever had come to expect.

Spatry has his own website where he is very active in helping people, not to mention the other 2,928 member that are very willing (and polite) to help others get up and running. He also has videos to help people get familiarized with the distro so that they can get up and going with the greatest of ease.

And as one exclaimed earlier on in this thread of how the new experience of the Linux world can make one become very annoyed, especially with the first install, I dare say that Spatry's Cup of Linux is not only the best Linux experience one will ever find, but that all the frustration can be skipped by installing it first and then from there no reason(s) to fret.

Hope I am not to late in getting you this news of such a great Linux distro before you start to wade though the rest of them (as I and another 2,928 people did) whereby you can easily skip all the annoying/frustrating aspects of the Linux world in general and get right on into what makes it so great. There is no other distro up to par with this one at this time, others are trying but as far as up to date/stable/and extremely user friendly right out of the box that will never need re-installing they are not there yet. So do yourself a big favor and visit: http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php?action=forum

And as for help in getting your gaming on try the following to assist you in such an en-devour: http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index....fd34d33df26412

TheTexasRAT,

Errr, I don't suppose that you might be the aforementioned Shawn Patrick Ryan (aka Spatry) of Cup of Linux fame, by any chance?

NO, just a very satisfied newbie.

I tried Ubunto, Lbunto, Linux Light, Puppy Linux, Linux Mint, Slitaz, KNOPPIX, Zorin, and more before I finally found out about Rolling Releases.

Of which Manjaro was to be reported as the most user friendly. Yet as a newbie it was still over my head a bit. Then I came across Michael Moore's Manjaro distro and the Linux world opened up (except that it had an issue that would not let it update.

Then I found Spatry's Cup of Linux and it was flawless. Of coarse I do not like the all black them or boarderless windows but hey by then I was a novelist at changing the preferred setting in Linux distros. Anyway I still have to be walked through the command line stuff, but Sparty now says his distro is prefigured, right out of the box, for 100% User Interface.

Now back when I first was installing all these I had an older laptop that was not compatible with the WiFi of Linux, so I went and got a new laptop (Dell Precision M6300) that came with W7 installed and has a small HDD that is not large enough for me to dual boot so I have not installed Spatry's newer version yet. But today I will be ordering an SSD that will be big enough and plain on dual booting W7 and Spatry' Cup Of Linux onto it.

But again no I am not Spatry, just a very satisfied Linux novelist since I came across Spatry's distro of Manjaro based off of Arch Linux.
