Dell Inspiron 8100 screen resolution

I'm sure you all have heard this before. I'm sorry if I am posting a repeat. I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 and I have installed Mandrake Linux 10.0 on it. Everything works fine, but I don't want to always use 1600X1200 resolution. If I go any smaller, I get thick bars on the top, bottom, left and right of my screen. So instead of making everything biggger, it shrinks the screen. Any input is welcome. Again, sorry for the newbie question.

Dell 8100 screen issues

My Dell Inspiron 8100 has the same display problem. However, I believe it to be a video hardware issue because it's doing the same thing on me with different OS's - WinXP, RedHat 9, Fedora Core 2, FreeBSD. Even the Dell BIOS screen that shows before the OS starts to load is a tiny block in the middle of my screen.
