Dell inspiron 1100 external monitor.

I really need help. I have to make a presentation about linux on my university and i don't want to use power point and windows for this.
I just got my new dell 1100 laptop and I have make most of the hardware work. So I have the idea make my presentation with Open Office and linux. The problem is that when I try to connect it to my desktop monitor and i press FN+F8 to display kde on the screen the laptop totaly freezes.
Is this a problem with outputing the video to an external monitor or the problem is with the FN functions. At the moment I am searching the web for some utility call gtk acme that what i have read makes the FN keys work.

If any one had a similar problem please post me some help, I have to make the presentation next tuesday. My teacher is bitch that loves Microsoft and I want to show her tha linux is the best.

just if anybody is interesting I found a provisional solution. If I change the screen to the external monitor or a proyector (I hope) It would work. If I try to return back to the laptop lcd the computer totally freezes and the only thing I can do is shut down the computer.

I try the acme deamon but it has no option for changing the display from the lcd to a monitor or a proyector
